Sustainable features on Sainsbury’s included:

• Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHP Plant) offering a 50 – 60% reduction in carbon emissions. Gas used to generate heat and electricity, which is then used to run the warehouse refrigeration system; the additional electricity is used on-site to run the facility
• Onsite resource recycling unit utilizing the hot water from the CHP plant
• Larger area of roof lights (15%) to maximize natural daylight combined with intelligent low-energy lighting system
• Narrow plate office buildings to enhance natural lighting, combined with brise soleil to minimize solar gain
• South facing walls constructed as solar collectors; this virtually eliminates the need for frost protection heating
• Innovative wall mounted photovoltaic panels to harness solar energy
• Built up cladding system capable of re-use at the end of the building lifecycle
• Rainwater harvesting saving an estimated 16 million litres of water a year
• Superior airtight construction to minimize air permeability from the building envelope
